Brewdog was one of the biggest risers in the off-trade, selling 83% more year on year to reach £71m, according to the Britain’s Biggest Alcohol Brands report by The Grocer.

The number one brand in the top 100 was Stella Artois, with £533m in sales (up 1%), followed by Smirnoff and Budweiser.

Estrella Damm broke into the top 100 to reach 65, growing 93.2%, while Hop House 12 grew 244.4% to reach 99.

Gordon’s Gin grew sales by 29.7% to reach £276.5m in sales, while Budwieser added 13.3% with £418.4m sales.

While big-name established brands dominated the top 10, the report reflected trends in the on trade, with consumers drinking less, but increasingly drinking more premium alcohol.

Foster’s lost 11.9% - a drop of 47.9m worth of sales – though remained at number four.

Amstell crashed out of the top 100 after losing 21.9%, as did Old Mout cider, which was down 12.7%.

The Grocer found: “Brits are trading up. Many of the year’s most significant gains have gone to brands with a considerably higher average price than category mainstays, such as Estrella Damm and Yellow Tail.

“But that’s not the whole story. Gordon’s, the UK’s biggest gin brand – and an undeniably mainstream one – is 2018’s biggest winner, thanks to a stellar performance from both its traditional clear gin and its recently launched Pink variant.”
