Giles Thorley, one of the City's best-known financial engineers and the former chief executive of Punch Taverns, is poised to join private equity firm TDR Capital. He will work alongside TDR's founders, Stephen Robertson and Manjit Dale, who backed Punch Taverns in the late 1990s when both men worked at DB Capital Partners. Mr Thorley's talks with TDR were disclosed in The Sunday Telegraph. It is understood that Mr Thorley, who left Punch after nine years at the helm in March, will work on new investments at TDR, rather than the firm's existing pubs businesses. TDR acquired 333 drinks-led Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) pubs for £373m in the summer and renamed them the Stonegate Pub Group. It was reported over the weekend that M&B has put a further 53 pubs on the market, worth around £30m, and is being advised by Sapient Corporate Finance. Sunday Telegraph
