Taster, a French start-up which creates delivery-only restaurant brands for Deliveroo and UberEats, has raised £3m to expand its operations and launch in London.

The company, led by former Deliveroo executive Anton Soulier, secured the funding round led by Denmark-based Sunstone Capital, with Global Founders Capital, Thierry Gillier and LocalGlobe also participating.

Formerly known as Mission Food, Taster builds restaurant concepts in major cities specifically for online delivery platforms, and has a target to open 60 restaurants within two years.

Opening its first site one year ago, it currently operates three brands, Mission Saigon, a Vietnamese concept; O Ke Kai, a poke kitchen; and recently launched OutFry, and is currently live in Paris, Lille and Madrid, with London next.

Yacine Ghalim, principal at Sunstone Capital, said: “Taster is in the midst of a perfect storm… [and] the team understands this opportunity better than anyone else. We believe that they have a unique opportunity to create an iconic consumer brand in food. As an investor, it is doubly exciting to invest in a company which product has become an integral part of your daily life.

“The cultural orthodoxy in food is that every meal is always somewhat of a compromise—between taste, convenience, health, and price. Luckily for all of us, this simply doesn’t have to be the case anymore. And Taster is on a mission to challenge that.”
