Japanese brewer Kirin has acquired a 25% stake in Brooklyn Brewery.

The deal will give Kirin the rights to sell Brooklyn’s products in its izakaya pubs around the country.

Kirin will pay an undisclosed sum for the stake in Brooklyn, which is the 12th biggest US craft beer by sales volume. Brooklyn will be independently run without any changes to management, Kirin said in a statement this week.

The two companies will establish a joint venture in Japan, in which Kirin will own 60% to Brooklyn’s 40%, to “roll out the Brooklyn brand”.
