Diageo has been given permission to create a Johnnie Walker-themed tourist attraction in Edinburgh.

As part of it’s £150m in the whisky brand, Diageo transform the former House of Fraser building at the west end of Princes Street into a three-storey into an immersive attraction mapping the history of Johnnie Walker.

Under the plans, it will be adapted to provide an events space for staging music, theatre and community events along with a bar academy, while retail space will be created on street level.

The venture, approved by the city council yesterday, will create up to 180 jobs. Diageo has suggested it could generate £135 million in tourism spending. Work will begin in the summer and it could be open by the end of next year.
