There have been warnings that ale could be the next front in the supermarket wars after Lidl unveiled a new beer line-up focused on regional breweries.

According to M&C’s sister title The Grocer, Lidl has this week launched its Brewery concept, fronted by musician and food columnist Alex James, featuring brewers such as Shepherd Neame, McEwans, Greene King and Marston’s.

Analysis of a selection of ales stocked by Lidl shows the retailer is matching or under-cutting the top five on price.

Lidl said the launch followed “the incredible success” of its wine and spirits offering, which it claims has grown almost 40% year-on-year.
