Starbucks, the struggling international coffee shop operator, has announced plans to open more stores in the UK. Speaking at the launch of its new instant coffee, Howard Schultz, the chief executive, said the company wanted to maintain its position as the UK’s number one coffee chain. He said: “People are voting every day and they are voting for Starbucks. We are the leader here and we will maintain that.” Schultz added: “We’re not only here to stay but our best days are ahead of us, especially in the UK where it is still early for us.” Starbucks UK and Ireland chief executive Darcy Wilson-Rymer said the company would be using the recession and the failure of high street retailers to its advantage when looking for new sites.
