Motorway service station operator Welcome Break is to begin the extension of its partnership with PizzaExpress with a further opening at South Mimms services off the M25.

The two companies opened their first site together at the Oxford services off the M40 last December.

Welcome Break intends to open a further five PizzaExpress restaurants across its estate next year, including anchoring the new-look Fleet services off the M3.

Rod McKie, chief executive of the motorway service station operator, told MCA at the end of last year that the first PizzaExpress restaurant, at Oxford, had traded well in its first few weeks and represented a shift in consumer demand.

He said: “He said: “Twelve or 13 years ago we were taking out all the casual dining chains on the basis that customers didn’t really want them. Clearly, that has come full circle and customers now do.”
