The Restaurant Group is to permanently close between 100 and 120 of its leisure brands sites.

Yesterday, it was revealed that the group would close a “large number” of its Frankie and Benny’s restaurants, but it is now understood that smaller sister brands including Garfunkel’s and Coast to Coast will also be affected.

Last year, TRG said it intended to close up to 150 sites in its leisure division – which includes approximately 240 Frankie & Benny’s restaurants – over the next five years, but it has since been forced to accelerate these plans due to pressures caused by the coronavirus crisis.

This isn’t the first time the group has been forced to downsize. In March, TRG closed 61 of its 80 Chiquito restaurants as well as its 11 Food & Fuel London pubs in London after they fell into administration.

In an email to managers seen by the BBC earlier this week, the company said that many sites were “no longer viable and will remain closed permanently.”

“The covid-19 crisis has significantly impacted our ability to trade profitably, so we have taken the tough decision to close these restaurants now.”

It is understood that none of its 150 Wagamama sites will close.
