Tossed has opened a new store in London’s Brunswick Square as it continues the rollout of its cashless store model.

The group’s 23rd UK store will operate seven days a week and open until 9pm Monday to Saturday.

Tossed’s finance director Neil Sebba told MCA its cashless model, which was launched in Coleman Street store last March had now been rolled out across two thirds of his estate.

He said he was unsure whether the format – which sees customers order through via tablets rather than manned tills - would be appropriate for its Westfield stores but said the group planned to remove cash from its final two company-owned stores imminently. The group is also considering implementing the technology in the sites it operates with Welcome Break.

He said the reaction from customers had been positive, adding: “We knew it was a risk but I think you have to take risks in a market as competitive as this. The biggest worry was that people would miss that human interaction but we have made sure that is still a very big element of the experience. Having that technology allows us to streamline and speed up the process.”

On recent trading he said: “January has started very strong. It’s an important time of year for us when people are conscious of their new year’s resolutions to eat more healthily and the challenge is to convince those people that eating healthily isn’t a chore. We’ve managed to do that successfully and I’m confident we will again this year.”

The group has also been at the forefront of the delivery revolution, having been early adopters of Deliveroo and now also working with UberEats and Amazon.

Sebba said: “It’s become an important part of the business and we’re keen to continue to grow that. We’ll have to see how that market develops and how resilient that custom remains if economic conditions change.”
