Taco Bell, the Mexican fast-food concept, is understood to be close to opening restaurants in Colchester, Essex and Nottingham.

The Yum! Brands-owned chain has secured a unit on Nottingham’s Angel Row on the former Odeon site.

Taco Bell has submitted an application for a site on Head Street in the town after its original attempt to open in a new development on the High Street fell through, the Essex Daily Gazette reports.

The site will be the eighth in the UK and fourth in Essex with sites in Basildon, Chelmsford and Thurrock; two units in Sheffield – including the first high street restaurant that launched last year – Manchester and Barnsley.

The quick service restaurant has ambitions to open many more sites across the country. Nick Dawson, the head of Taco Bell’s UK division told M&C there is potential to open “hundreds” of restaurants in the UK.

Having developed its brand and built up a supply chain the company is now looking to accelerate the pace of openings to double its estate by the end of this year and then open five to 10 every year as it scales up.
