Julie’s Restaurant and Bar in Holland Park, London, has become the first restaurant in the country to be fined for falsely claiming to use organically farmed meats in its meals. The restaurant, which is popular with Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kylie Minogue, said it used organic produce in three of its dishes. However, environmental health officers seized delivery records and discovered it was ordinary meat. Johnny Ekperigin, managing director of Julie’s, admitted three offences under the Food Safety Act 1990 but denied he had used the non-organic produce in an attempt to save money but as a genuine mistake. He was fined £7,500 and warned that he could face jail if found to be falsely claiming to use organic ingredients again.
