The former director of London’s Michelin-starred Tamarind Collection is to open a new Indian restaurant in the capital next month.
Restaurateur Rajesh Suri has teamed up with former Zaika head chef Dayashankar Sharma to launch Grand Trunk Road in South Woodford in mid-November.
Named after the famous Asian trade route, the restaurant will serve a series of regional Indian dishes inspired by towns found along the road.
Suri said: “I want to remind people of the intricate, fragrant roots of Indian food; Grand Trunk Road provides quality fare with original heart – a fabulous pairing rich with depth and flavour.”
Dayashankar’s menu will feature meat, fish and vegetarian options, with dishes such as pheasant supreme with pickling spices and yoghurt; and crusted seared scallops with roasted red pepper, garlic and tomato chutney.
Specials will include a sikandari raan - a slow-braised lamb leg garnished with sweet onion, cashew nut and almond sauce, served whole at the table for groups of four or more.
Suri was director of the Tamarind Collection of restaurants, including Tamarind of Mayfair, Imli Street in Soho and Zaika of Kensington, for 17 years until 2015.
