Build your own pizza franchise Project Pie is considering a name change to avoid confusion in the UK market, MCA has learnt.

Susan Canavan, who holds the UK and Ireland master franchise for San Diego-founded Project Pie with her husband John, confirmed holding company The Canavan Co (UK) Ltd had applied to secure the rights to the name Project Pizza.

In the US, pizzas are sometimes called pizza pies, but Canavan said UK customers were confused by the name Project Pie.

She said: “People think we’re a pie shop. We’re struggling with the word pie in the UK.

“What would you think if you saw a sign? They think we’re a pie and mash shop.

“We are considering a name change – we may not even get the rights. It’s brainstorm marketing at the moment.”

Project Pie currently has two sites in Dundee and intu Bromley, with a third due to open in Southampton.

Former Hakkasan Group chief executive Niall Howard was co-owned and founded the UK franchise of Project Pie with the Canavans but exited earlier this year.
