Pizza Piazza has gone into receivership, citing July’s terrorist bombings in London as a contributing factor. The company’s banker, Calyon, called in receivers Begbies Traynor earlier this month. Avenue Castle, a group controlled by the company’s directors, including chief executive Ivan Taylor, has bought 14 of the group’s 22 sites for an undisclosed fee. Taylor led a £11.25m buyout of Pizza Piazza from BrightReasons, the Whitbread division, in 1997, backed by 3i. The company operated 11 properties under the Pizza Piazza name, with 10 trading as Pizza Organic and one as Pizza Pollo. Two outlets, in Farnham, Surrey and Kingston upon Thames, have been sold and four have been closed.
