McDonald’s said that it expected first quarter earnings to be up on last year after seeing a rise in domestic sales. Sales at restaurants open more than a year in the United States rose 14.2% in the first quarter. In March, sales rose 9.9% at the same sites. Sales in Europe, however, were up only 3.5% for the quarter, with sales at restaurants open more than a year down 2.9% in March. The chain was hopeful that its salad menu would improve its fortunes in the continent once it was rolled out from Britain and Germany.
