McDonald’s has the worst standing with UK consumers of all high street food and drink operators, according to the latest Populus poll for The Times.

The burger chain was rated bottom in the overall impression poll just below Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), as consumers said they preferred good quality, healthiness and price over speed when deciding where to eat on the high street.

Subway was rated top in the consumer approval rating followed by Costa Coffee, Pizza Hut and Starbucks.

The research found that 84% of people felt that fast food chains were not doing enough to tackle social and environmental issues, compared to 64% for coffee shop chains.

Costa Coffee was seen to be doing the most to address environmental concerns, followed Wild Bean Café, Subway and Starbucks.

KFC was regarded as doing the least to address green issues, just below McDonald’s, Burger King and Pizza Hut.
