Thousands of people enjoyed candlelit dinners to mark Earth Hour this weekend, as restaurants across the UK and beyond turned out their lights to celebrate the planet.

A huge variety of venues joined in the global event, serving dinner by candlelight as Food Made Good partnered with WWF to enable diners to mark the occasion.

Places as diverse as Michelin starred restaurants like Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, group restaurants like Brasserie Blanc and at Daylesford in the Cotswolds took part in the event.

A number of restaurants prepared special menus, including the Gladwin Brothers’ The Shed and Rabbit which treated guests to a surprise tasting menu. The Captain’s Galley, in Scrabster, 2015 Sustainable Restaurant of the Year, joined forces with Yealands, the wine supplier, serving seafood from the depths of the ocean, where there is little or no light, accompanied by a range of sustainable wines.

This was the second year that WWF and the Sustainable Restaurant Association which runs Food Made Good have come together for Earth Hour.

Mark Linehan, managing director of the SRA, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to bring together so many people in a common cause, in such a straightforward and enjoyable way. Simply by turning out their electric lights and placing candles on the tables, restaurants of all types were able to communicate a simple but very effective message to thousands of diners this Earth Hour. By serving a sustainable dinner by candlelight these restaurant have helped raise consumer awareness of the huge potential environmental footprint of food.”
