The Indian Restaurant Group, formerly known as the Mela Group, has converted its 3 Monkeys restaurant in Herne Hill into a Mela site, as part of plans to rollout the brand. The company, which also owns the Mela in Shaftesbury Avenue and the Chowki in Denman Street, is looking to expand its two core Indian restaurant brands. Amit Pau, the group’s chief executive said that he planned to open three or four sites under each brand every year. He said that he was focusing on locations in London and the South East of England and was in negotiations over sites in Redhill and North Hill for Mela restaurants. India Outsourcing Services, the AIM-listed cash shell company, acquired Mela Group for £2m in January via a reverse takeover. It then changed the group’s name to Indian Restaurants group. Average spend per head is £25 at Mela and £15 at Chowki.
