Hen, the ethical chicken restaurant concept founded by Philip Ilic, has closed both its sites one year after raising nearly £150,000 in crowdfunding.

The first Hen site opened in Brighton in December 2014 and was followed by a pop-up in Islington.

Ilic, the son of Little Bay and Foodlic owner Peter Ilic, launched a £100,000 Crowdcube campaign in November 2015 to build an estate of company-owned and franchised restaurants, raising £147k.

He told MCA at the time his five-year plan was to open six restaurants in London as well as 15 restaurants under franchise by 2020.

Ilic, who ran French bistro Le Mercury Deuxieme and is a registered director of Just Around The Corner Ltd restaurant business, also said at the time that an angel investor was putting £200k into Hen.

Hen’s former Brighton site on Trafalgar Street has seen several operators open and close in recent years, and has now been taken over by Japanese and Korean restaurant O’Shio.
