Alasdair Murdoch, chief executive of Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK), the Famous Brands-owned group, has told MCA that the group is on track to post turnover close to £80m in its current financial year.

The company saw turnover increase 21% to £67.4m for the year ending 28 February 2016. Pre-tax profit stood at £3.3m compared with £1.1m the previous year.

Murdoch told MCA that trading had continued to be strong since the February year end. He said: “We have had good like-for-like growth every month and are on track to have a turnover close to £80m. It is fair to say that the last couple of months have seen sales, still well above the Industry, yet at a lower run rate. In this year we will open 12 restaurants.”

The company opened in Bolton last week and will open in Glasgow Fort on Friday.

Earlier this year, it bought back its five franchise restaurants in Ireland.

Murdoch said: “We have refurbished and converted a couple to counter service with very strong initial results.”

In the year to 28 February 2016, the group’s gross profit increased by 23% to £28.8m (2015: £23.4m) and gross profit margin was 42.7% (2015: 41.8%). Administrative expenses for the period increased 14% to £23.1m (2015: £20.2m) due to the increased number of restaurants in the estate. Restaurant opening costs for the period increased 33.3% to £1.2m (2015: £0.9m).

Famous Brands, the South Africa-based operator of the Wimpy and Steers concepts, acquired GBK, in a deal believed to be worth £120m, in September.

The group said the acquisition of the 75-strong operator would significantly strengthen its position in the UK and stressed there were plans to double GBK’s footprint within the next five years. It also plans to bring the brand to its South African heartland.
