Five Guys, the popular US burger chain, which launched its first UK site earlier this month in Covent Garden, is understood to have secured its fourth site here and taken further steps to strengthen its pipeline outside of the capital.

The group is understood to have secured the former Starbucks unit at 71 Upper Street in Islington for an opening later this year, as part of the five sites it plans to open by the end of 2013.

It is also believed to be in talks on further sites in London, plus units in Lakeside and in Croydon.

It will open at the Oracle in Reading next month and has secured a third site Westfield London in Shepherd’s Bush.

The company is planning to open in five strategic locations by the end of this year before assessing its model in the UK ahead of its aim of having a “national presence” here.

It is thought that the group had been in talks with Network Rail regarding a transport hub site.
