El Gato Negro, the original restaurant from Bird and Beast founder Simon Shaw, is set to open in Manchester after securing a site on King Street this summer.

The restaurant, which has been based in Ripponden, West Yorks, for the past nine years where it has been awarded two Michelin Guide Bib Gourmands, is relocating to the heart of Manchester in an attempt to grow the business.

Spanish restaurant El Gato Negro will be spread across three floors including an al fresco dining area and open kitchen.

Founder and chef patron Simon Shaw said: “Bringing El Gato Negro to Manchester is a timely opportunity to showcase a broader selection of the dishes and wines I’m so passionate about. There’s a massive resurgence in the new British wave of Spanish restaurants and we want to go further with the dining experience we pioneered almost 10 years ago.

“52 King Street is the perfect destination for us. It’s a fantastic building – inviting and airy with great ceiling heights that are so very typical of a traditional tapas bar – it feels like it was made for El Gato Negro.”

Shaw is opening his second Bird and Beast site in Manchester after debuting the chicken rotisserie restaurant in Leeds.
