Chiltern Firehouse’s head chef Nuno Mendes is opening a standalone restaurant at London’s Spitalfields Market in May.

The 40-cover all-day, casual dining Portuguese restaurant will be called Taberno do Mercado.

Mendes will continue in his role of head chef at the Chiltern Firehouse as well as running the new restaurant.

Mendes, who previously worked at the now closed Viajante until last year, opened Bacchus in Hoxton in 2006 when he coined the phrase ‘fine dining in trainers’.

A soft launch at Taberno do Mercado will be hosted from 4 – 10 May and will be open to the public from 11 May, when it will have a no reservation policy.
