Massimo Bottura has returned to the top spot in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants rankings, produced by MCA’s parent company, William Reed.

Bottura’s Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, was unveiled as the winner at last night’s ceremony in Bilbao, Spain.

El Cellar de Can Roca – the 2015 winner and last year’s third place – took the second spot, with France’s Mirazur taking the third spot.

Eleven Madison Park - the 2018 winner which spent part of the year closed for renovations - was named fourth.

After his win, Bottura said: “We are better now than in 2016, we are wiser. The team is stronger and we have so many projects now. We could be just dreaming, but instead we want to take practical steps towards making dreams come true.”

The Clove Club is the highest placed UK restaurant, at number 33, while Shoreditch site, Lyle’s is the highest new entry for the UK – at 38. The Ledbury (42) and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (45) also feature.
