6C champion wins top industry accolade

One of the real champions of branded restaurants in the UK, Tony Hughes managing director of Six Continents' restaurant group has won the Best Individual category at this year's prestigious Retailers' Retailer of the Year Awards.

Tony Hughes heads a portfolio of brands from Browns to Harvester, All-Bar-One to the new Need the Dough.

The annual awards for excellence in the restaurant, pub and bar market are organised by Martin Information, the sector's leading business information provider, but are voted for by the industry itself. Senior executives across the industry vote for each of the six category winners.

The other winners for 2002 are:

•Best Concept û Wagamama: the "chic "noodle bar chain now expanding outside of London.

• Best Company û PizzaExpress: the UK's number one casual dining group, now becoming a major international player.

• Best Venue - Living Room, Manchester: a modern bar concept, bringing a new angle to the nightclub, bar and restaurant mix and the first in a now growing chain. A haunt for Manchester's football celebrities.

• Best Newcomer û Carluccio's: a fresh simple approach to Italian food combining retail with a café/restaurant operation.

• Best Design - Smith's of Smithfield: picked out for the imaginative use of space at one of London 's most popular eating places.

On Tony Hughes, the winner of best individual, Peter Martin said: "He continues to inspire and motivate those both inside and outside his team - and over the years has helped develop many younger managers who are now making their mark at the head of their own companies."

On Wagamama's award he added: " Its successful simple formula has seen it opening beyond London in cities as diverse as Manchester, Dublin and Amsterdam."

On PizzaExpress he said: "Expansion into Europe and further afield means it could well be picking up an Award for Exports soon - keeping it simple but stylish is a vital key to its success."

On Living Room, he said: "The company has three sites in Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool. Its first site in London will open on 11 March in Smithfield, and Islington is due to open at the beginning of May."

On Carluccio's he said: "Carluccio's clever combination of retail store with an informal and stylish Italian caffe has certainly caught the industry's notice. It has brought a fresh approach to the Italian food market in London".

Carluccio's sixth site is set to open in London's Smithfield later this month.

The awards presentation dinner, held at Le Meridien Waldorf hotel in London, was sponsored by SG, Guinness UDV, Kirin and Leisure Link.
