Scottish brewer and restaurant operator West has closed one of its Glasgow sites, blaming a rise in business rates.

Founder Petra Wetzel said it was no longer commercially viable to run West on the Corner, and will instead focus on its remaining Glasgow Green site.

In a statement, Wetzel said that the level of rent and insurance, and the recent increase in rates forced the decision.

She added: “Our company motto is ‘Glaswegian Heart, German Head’ and the idea for a little West in the West End was most definitely a heart over head decision.

“I lived on Woodlands Road as a student and my son Noah loved the idea of a corner pub in the West End.

“However, the level of rent and insurance, and the recent increase in rates has meant the site is no longer of commercial benefit to our business.”

West on the Corner was opened on Woodlands Road in 2015 after a £350,000 refurbishment of the premises.
