Stonegate expects to have converted or begun converting six of the 78 pubs that it bought from Bramwell Pub Company by the end of this month, M&C Report has learnt.
The second ex-Bramwell pub to receive a conversion, the Bessemer in central Sheffield, re-opens on Wednesday following a £300,000 investment.
“The pub is being totally re-designed with new décor and furniture throughout, as well as a bigger dancefloor to accommodate our fantastic party nights”, said general manager Andrew Baker. “The Bessemer has always been one of Sheffield’s favourite destination pubs but it’s been in need of refurbishment for a while, so with this makeover we couldn’t be more thrilled.”
It follows the conversion of another former Bramwell pub, the Vanguard in Fareham, Hampshire, into a Slug and Lettuce.
Another ex-Bramwell site, the Bridgewater in Darwen, is to re-open this week, a spokeswoman told M&C Report. Work is due to begin on three more this month: the Cape in Stockton Heath; the Sovereign in Ramsgate, which will sit under the Great Trad banner like the Bessemer; and Crown in Egham, Surrey, which will become a Classic Inn.
Speaking to M&C Report last month, Stonegate’s outgoing chief executive Tony Smith said investments are planned for between 20 and 25 of the former Bramwell sites for the rest of 2014.
“Predominately they will be under our ‘trad pub’ banner because they are great traditional pubs,” Smith said. The company bought the package of pubs in November from the administrator of Bramwell in a deal believed to be around £35m,
The new-look Bessemer in Sheffield will open daily from 10am for breakfasts. The menu will feature traditional pub classics alongside dishes with a contemporary twist such as Roast Beef Yorkshire Wraps and Curry Lover’s Pie.
Baker said: “One aspect of the Bessemer that is definitely here to stay will be our Friday and Saturday party nights where we stay open until 2am and featuring non-stop golden oldies from the 50s 60s 70s & 80s. We are also launching a new Thursday evening 80s night that’s destined to get the dancefloor rocking and will of course, continue to host our Soul on Sunday event from 3pm until 9pm the last Sunday of each month.”
