Stella Artois has awarded its Quality Award to the family-run Blakey's bar in Newcastle. Martin Blakeman, the bar’s owner, was presented with the award and £3,000 cash at the British Institute of Innkeeping's regional event in Cheltenham. Blakeman said the secret of his success was: "providing quality and a warm welcome, putting the customer first and understanding their needs." Peppi Cremona, Interbrew UK’s on-trade marketing director, said: "The standard of finalists was very high and there was not much to choose between them. The Stella Artois Quality Award recognises the retailers setting the standards in terms of quality – and Blakey's is a fine example."
