Springwood has been awarded a late-night drinks licence for a Zanzibar nightclub in Nottingham after a 19-month battle with police and residents.

Licensing magistrates rejected police arguments that the new nightclub, planned for a former Odeon cinema and with a capacity of almost 2,000, would increase alcohol-related violence in the city's centre.

They also snubbed an argument that the proposed club was too close to a taxi rank, saying instead the rank would be a benefit in getting customers of the club out of the area quickly after closing.

The club has planning permission, but no start date has been set yet.
