Landlords are boycotting Macmillan Cancer Support over its “Sober October” campaign, accusing the charity of putting off customers from already struggling businesses.

Publicans have claimed their takings can drop by up to 50 per cent as sobriety is encouraged among their patrons.

Proprietors who have hosted Macmillan coffee mornings and other fundraising events have lost patience with the charity, which they say takes advantage of the trade’s willingness to support good causes – then effectively urges people to avoid pubs for an entire month.

Simon Delaney, who runs The Firbank Pub & Kitchen in Manchester, said: “It’s a great charity but at the end of the day, I’m not going to support something that’s turning my customers away.
