Nexum Leisure, the nightclub operator, has announced it has acquired the freehold of the former Tonic nightclub in Barnsley for an undisclosed sum. The company said that the club will re-open in August this year under its Escapade brand, following a £3m extension and refurbishment, which will take its capacity to 2,000. Paul Kinsey, chief executive of Nexum, said: “While this acquisition, and the opening this week of our Synergy venue in Rotherham, may be seen as something of a south Yorkshire invasion, it continues our policy of rolling out our core brands within areas where we feel there is a demand for high-quality night-time entertainment.” Over the past six months Nexum has also acquired sites in Bristol and Blackpool, which both now operate under its Syndicate brand.
