A new pub company called Midas Taverns is pioneering franchising unbranded pubs from Six Continents Retail.

Midas, started by Greg and Gill Mangham, says it wants to "re-establish the unbranded pub within a sector besieged by fashionable venues."

It already has three pubs in London leased from SixCR, and is negotiating further funding to to expand to 20 outlets in London and the Home Counties within year one and 40 by the end of its second year.

Greg Mangham said the working ethos of the company was "to welcome customers to a value for money pub with quality staff in an un-themed safe and enjoyable environment."

Bob Cartwright, communications director at Six Continents Retail, said as well as trialling franchising with branded outlets such as O’Neills and Scream, SixCR was now trying out franchising "selected" unbranded venues.

He said: "We are looking at alternative ways of running properties and giving franchisees access to specialist support, such as front and back-of-house IT, beyond what you would normally get with a lease."
