Hertfordshire-based brewer and pub operator McMullen’s has submitted plans to build a new pub on a retail park in Colchester, Essex.

The pub will operate the company’s Chicken & Grill format, which specialises in “traditional pub comforts”, such as rotisserie chicken, chargrilled meats and ice cream sundaes.

The pub will be McMullen’s most easterly site and be part of an expanding retail development south of the city which includes a supermarket and other restaurant outlets, company secretary Tom McMullen told M&C Report.

He said he was hopeful the site would be open by Christmas.

McMullen currently operates 10 pubs under the Chicken & Grill trading format, including the Old Crown in Royston, a former Bramwell Pub Company site scheduled to open Easter-time with a new name, and which will also offer hand-crafted pizzas.

McMullen also said the Kingfisher on the Quay near Farnborough, Hampshire, an ex-Orchid site purchased in 2013 and opened last summer was trading well.

In February last year the company opened its first newbuild, the Prince George in Milton Keynes.
