JD Wetherspoon, the managed pub and bar operator, is set to build one of the greenest pubs in the UK, writes Paul Charity. The company wants to use a wind turbine to power a planned pub in Melton Mowbray. Other planned energy-saving measures include camouflaged solar water heating panels on roofs and using equipment and rainwater to help flush toilets. Architect for the scheme is RJD Architectural Design and Project Management, which has stated: “Our client is looking for this development to be a flagship 'green pub', to set new standards in energy efficiency. “A variety of measures and new equipment will be used which, it is hoped, will see the pub use 50% less energy than a current pub of similar size. “Energy will be generated from the wind turbine and photovoltaic cells disguised so as to not stand out from the grey-slated roof.” If planning permission is granted Wetherspoon hopes to start work before Christmas with the pub opening around May 2007.
