Marston’s has announced that Rupert Thompson, the chief executive of Refresh UK, the largest brewer of organic ales, is to step down at the end of the week. Thompson’s resignation comes as Marston’s plans to integrate the Refresh business, which it acquired in April, ahead of time. Thompson said that that he had decided to leave as the integration had so far been a success and had taken half the time originally planned. Refresh, which was established in 2000, comprises the Wychwood Brewery in Witney, Oxfordshire that brews 50,000 barrels of beer per year of brands such as Hobgoblin and Brakespear. The company also brews organic ales such as Duchy Originals Organic Ale, as well as having partnership agreements with Wadworth, Thatchers, Lowenbrau and Innis & Gun.
