Hawthorn Leisure says 75% of its tenants and 99% of its pub partners have indicated they plan to reopen when the Government gives the green light for 4 July.

The community pub operator, part of New River real estate investment trust, said the financial support and goodwill generated through lockdown among its pub partners and tenants would ensure a return to a “sustainable trading level in the future”.

CEO Mark Davies said 97% of tenants said the business had exceeded or met expectations of support during lockdown.

In the full year to 31 March 2020, Hawthorn Leisure reported a “solid and sustainable period” with high income growth across its pub portfolio and like-for-like EBITAE growth of +5.9% (pre-covid).

Davies said: “Covid-19 has presented a challenging period for our industry but we have taken appropriate measures to ensure the safety, well-being and financial viability of our pub partners and tenants and the financial support and goodwill we generated through lockdown will ensure we get back to a sustainable trading level in the future. We are proud to say that 97% of our tenants said we have exceeded or met expectations of support during lockdown.

“We have also been working hard to prepare our pubs for re-opening in July and look forward to welcoming our customers back to their local community pubs. 75% of our Tenants and 99% of our Pub Partners have already indicated their intention to open when the Government gives the green light for the 4th July. It’s crucial that our Government appreciates the importance of local pubs to the communities they serve, both through job creation and social fabric, and through my new Board role with the BBPA I am doing everything I can with my colleagues to get these key messages across and champion the UK pub sector.”
