The founders of Shoreditch restaurants Gunpowder, Madame D and Gul & Sepoy, Harneet and Devina Baweja, are to open a bakery and wine bar in July, called Custard.

It will be inspired by the old coffee houses of Kolkata and will be located at 4 Duchess Walk, SE1 2SD - part of the One Tower Bridge development.

The pair’s new venture will specialise in savouries, pastries and sandwiches from across the Indian subcontinent alongside European influences. Butter Chicken Puffs, Bombay Sandwiches, Goan Pork Sausage Rolls, and Sour Narangi Custard Tart with Pistachio Meringue are some of the items that may appear on the menu.

“I’ve been aching to launch a bakery for so long. In today’s fast-paced society, we’ve completely lost the art of sitting down together and enjoying each other’s company over something simple but delicious to eat and drink. I aim to bring that back. We’ve got a great location at Tower Bridge and I want to recreate the relaxed atmosphere of the old coffee houses of Kolkata”, said Harneet Baweja.

A second Gunpowder site is also due to open in August, on the first floor above the bakery.
