Greene King is apparently seeking to avoid the error made by Crowded House, the pub company that went into receivership in July 1999 after buying 40 Beefeater sites a year earlier and finding sales slumped once the brand name was removed.
The Suffolk-based brewer is one of several interested parties looking at the 51 Beefeater restaurants put up for sale by Whitbread for an estimated £40m-plus.
However, Greene King's chief executive, Tim Bridge, told the Times that the key issue would be to determine how the sites would perform if the Beefeater brand was taken off.
