Robert McDonald, the former finance director of Punch Taverns, has joined Luminar, Britain’s biggest nightclub group.

McDonald, 54, replaces Nick Beighton, who has left the group to join ASOS - As Seen On Screen - Europe’s fastest-growing online retailer.

McDonald joins the group led by Stephen Thomas on 16 March. He helped float Punch in 2002 and held various roles at Allied Domecq before it was acquired by Punch in 1999.

After leaving Punch he joined Woolworths, the stricken retailer, as finance director in November 2008, shortly before the group was placed in administration.

In a statement to the stock market this morning Alan Jackson, chairman of Luminar, said: “We are delighted to welcome Robert to our board. He brings a wealth of experience particularly in the area of operations.

“We all look forward to working with him and I have no doubt he will bring exceptional value to Luminar.”
