A former pub manager turned social housing consultant plans to open a series of “ethical” pubs, where 5% of the profits go to charity, after opening his first in Liverpool, M&C Report has learnt.

Mark Hibbard has opened Ethical Glass, a private leasehold on Harrington Street in the city centre that operates as a cocktail bar.

He said: “We operate in a different way to the chains. We offer very low prices for a city centre venue, but still use high-end brands in our food and drinks. Our regulars say that this is what makes the bar unique. That, and a warm reception, classy atmosphere and Rat Pack tunes in the air.

“I wanted to create something different. Providing a personal touch and bringing back the values of the bar tender from the good old days. I want people to know what to expect at The Ethical Glass. We don’t use gimmicks, fudged 2-for-1 promotions, pints at £1.70 - just quality brands at honest prices.”

A spokeswoman for the venture told M&C Report that the plan is to sell real ales and ciders in the next couple of months. “Currently the bar offers a range of entertainment such as open mike nights/quiz nights, but Mark wants to expand on this. He is also looking at expanding the food menu which currently includes sharing platters and Sunday roasts.

“Mark then plans to grow the suite of ethical glass venues with a view to opening similar style bars outside Liverpool city centre in close by surrounding areas.”
