The former Brakspear brewery in Henley-on-Thames has been bought by the Hotel du Vin group, which includes Body Shop founders Gordon and Anita Roddick among its shareholders, as the site for its seventh hotel.

The Times newspaper reports this morning that Hotel du Vin, company, which has just raised £13m in debt and equity funding, has paid £3.4m for part of the listed brewery and will spend another £5m converting it into a 42-room hotel with a bistro and three meeting rooms.

An adjoining development is set aside for a mixture of private and social housing.

Hotel du Vin has not yet been given planning permission, but is hoping the approach adopted with its six other hotels will help to persuade local planners to back the scheme. If the Henley scheme gets the green light from planners, it will open as a hotel in September 2004.
