Bloomsbury Leisure has acquired the freehold of a pub next to London’s Mansion House station as part of a planned five-strong estate of sites close to key underground stations over the next two years, M&C understands.

The purchase of the Hatchet from Greene King was done in partnership with private equity firm Ducalian Capital.

It will re-open in early December with “an exciting food and drink offer” and hotel rooms above the pub. Bloomsbury intends to keep the name of the pub.

Bloomsbury founder Jonathan Dalton told M&C the format of the sites would be dictated by their exact location, with those directly next to stations being converted to the company’s Tap brand with others operated as standalone outlets.

Dalton said: “It also depends on the size of the site – if it’s a bigger site and we can put a substantial food offer in there then it won’t be a Tap.”

Dalton said if the sites were on the market for more than £3m then the deals would be done in further partnerships with Ducalian but anything smaller or a leasehold site would be funded by Bloomsbury on its own.

The company is also opening The Resting Hare – a 3,000sq ft leasehold site in Kings Cross as an all-day offer with a 100 cover brasserie, terrace and bar.
