British Country Inns (BCI), the tax-efficient Enterprise Investment Scheme managed company, has acquired the Swan at Forton pub in Shropshire for an undisclosed sum from an asking price of £1.275m. The property on Eccleshall Road near Newport, which was acquired through BCI’s third investment scheme, includes a bar with a capacity for 244 people, a restaurant and nine letting rooms adjacent to the premises. The old coaching inn is a food-led destination pub that also features a wine and gift shop, as well as an outdoor area. BCI has acquired 15 freehold and one long leasehold traditional, food-led pubs through four investment schemes since its inception in April 2006, and is about to complete on three others. The company, which was created in April 2006 by Tim Udell, former retail director of Shepherd Neame, and Peter Matthews, former catering director at Wolverhampton & Dudley, currently operates 15 pubs. Christie & Co handled the deal on behalf of the sellers, Mr and Mrs Skelton, who have owned the business for 20 years and are set to run another food-led pub near the Lake District.
