A newly formed pub company has purchased two sites from the administrators of Bar Sport – the Midland-based chain run by Scott Murray. The Cannock and Walsall branches of Bar Sport have been acquired by Viking Pubs Limited for an undisclosed sum Viking boss Erik Plejdrup has pledged that the existing employees, including the management, will keep their jobs. The takeover does not include the venues in Loughborough and Rugby – which remain in administration. According to reports held with Companies House, Viking Pub Limited was incorporated on July 18. Richard Goodwin, from administrators Butcher Woods, said: “We can confirm Viking Pubs Ltd has made a successful takeover bid and the deal was sanctioned late last night. We are very pleased with the outcome.” The first Bar Sport opened in 1998 in Cannock, followed in 2001 with a venue in Walsall. The company then opened in Rugby and most recently in Loughborough. Murray said it had been hit by England’s failure to qualify for the Euro 2008 football tournament this summer. Bar Sport currently employs about 100 people. It recently unveiled plans to open up to 100 outlets through franchise partnerships, including in overseas holiday destinations such as Cyprus, Gibraltar and Spain.
