Sam Leith writes in The Daily Telegraph that the idea that 24-hour drinking will have much to do with alcoholism is a red herring.
He says by giving drink a more central place in the culture, it collaterally increases the exposure of potential addicts to alcohol.
But he says the people drinking and vomiting in the 24-hour Wetherspoon’s will largely be the birthday parties, the hens and the Friday nighters. He says alcoholics have never had too much trouble with closing time because there is always the warm bottle of white wine in the airing cupboard.
