Sticks ‘n’ Sushi, the Danish restaurant group, has promoted Andreas Karlsson, its UK managing director, to the role of group chief operating officer, MCA understands.

The group’s UK operations will remain under Karlsson’s remit, but in his extended role, he will also oversee the company’s estate in Denmark and the launch and development of its upcoming first restaurant in Berlin, which will open late this year or early next year pending progress on the build.

The company currently operates five sites in the UK and will open its sixth before the end of the year at the Nova scheme in London’s Victoria.

It will open a second regional UK site at the Westage development in Oxford next year. It is thought that the company is also exploring an opportunity to launch in Guildford.

Karlsson joined the group as operations director at the start of January 2011.

Previous to that he spent 15 years at Wagamama, including three years as director of international licensing. He was appointed UK managing director in March 2015.

Karlsson told MCA last year that the company will initially look to add more sites in commuter towns around the south east. He said it will spread out from the south east to eventually form a cluster of sites in the north of England.

He said he expects the opening rate to continue at one to two restaurants a year to ensure the quality of restaurants is not compromised as the concept scales up.
