Mitchells & Butlers has appointed two new independent non-executive directors.
Jane Moriarty joins with immediate effect, while Susan Murray joins the Board with effect from 8 March 2019.
Both will also join the Audit, Remuneration and Nomination Committees on appointment, with Murray to be identified by the Board as the senior independent director.
Moriarty, who is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland, is currently a director of NG Bailey Group Limited, Quarto Group Inc and Martin’s Properties Holdings Limited and was previously a senior advisory partner with KPMG LLP.
Murray has served on the boards of Compass Group PLC, Pernod Ricard SA, Imperial Brands PLC and EI Group plc and is a former council member of the Advertising Standards Authority.
She is currently a non-executive director of Hays Plc, Grafton Group PLC and Boparan Holdings Limited.
Commenting upon the appointments, Bob Ivell, chairman of Mitchells & Butlers said: “At our Annual General Meeting I reported that we were well advanced in the process of identifying and appointing two new independent non-executive directors and I am pleased that those discussions have now been concluded with the appointment of two excellent people who bring a wealth of further experience and expertise to our Board.”
M&B came under fire from fund manager Aberdeen Standards Investment last month for ‘poor corporate governance and lack of boardroom diversity’. Deborah Gilshan, ESG investment director at Aberdeen Standards Investments commented on the lack of boardroom diversity with only one female non-executive directors.
Commenting on the issue at the AGM Ivell said that shareholders could be reassured that the Board was committed to embracing diversity and that it was in the process of hiring two new non-execs which would address that.
