Adam Martin, formerly marketing and strategy director at Mitchells & Butlers (M&B), has been promoted to managing director of Tesco’s Hospitality division, MCA has learnt.

Martin joined what was then Tesco’s Family Dining arm back in April 2015 as its commercial and marketing director.

He joined the retailer from Brakes where he spent two and a half years as category & pricing director. At the time he was reunited with Adam Fowle, the former M&B chief executive, who was appointed to oversee Tesco Family Dining, which then incorporated Giraffe and Harris + Hoole.

Fowle stepped down as chief executive of Tesco Family Dining earlier this year.

The company started a refurbishment programme of its in-store cafes 18 months ago. The move was underlined when it acquired 266 in-store cafes that were previously operated by third party companies for around £9m in 2015.

However, over the last two years, the retailer has changed its strategy under new overall chief executive Dave Clarke to refocus on its core business.

This led to the sale of Giraffe to Boparan Restaurant Group (BRG) and Harris + Hoole to Caffe Nero.

A number of former M&B employees joined Fowle at Tesco, including Andrew Hallam, Tom Crowley, James Pavey and Sam Wignell. Crowley has since become chief executive of BRG.
