Coffee#1, the SA Brain-owned coffee shop chain, has furthered strengthened its team with the appointment of a head of people.

Joe Thornewill joins from the MSG Group, where he was head of learning and development. Prior to that he worked at CH & Co and the Kout Group.

It is the latest senior appointment to the Coffee#1 team, which is increasingly autonomous from its parent company. Last year Bruce Newman moved across to head up the brand, while earlier this year, Jonathan Havenhand, who spent seven years as acquisitions director at CDG, joined as head of property for the c85-strong group.

Chief executive, Scott Waddington, told MCA the move was part of the wider plan to create more of a structure for Coffee#1 as the business grows. He said no further senior appointments were planned in the near future.
